Let's Celebrate International Castle Day!

Celebrated annually on July 19th, International Castle Day was established in 2015 by the Association of European Royal Residences based in France to highlight the cultural importance, architectural beauty, and heritage of castles and palaces worldwide and to encourage their preservation and appreciation.

As an architecture, history, and travel fan, I've visited Hearst Castle in California; Iolani Palace in Hawaii (the only royal residence on U.S. soil); the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.; Chambord, Chenonceau, Fontainbleau, the Louvre, and Mont-Saint-Michel in France; Kensington Palace and the Tower of London in England; the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia; and, of course, some Disney castles (Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland in California, Cinderella Castle at the Magic Kingdom in Florida, and Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant at Disneyland Paris in France).

Hold onto the castle line of thought for a moment while I pose the following question: How often have you seen something and thought, "LEGO should make a toy of that?" Sure, LEGO has countless toys for kids, but did you know that the international toy brand also has toy sets designed for the adult market?

According to LEGO's adult welcome page, "Spend quality time with LEGO sets designed specifically for adults. From wonders of the world to movie magic, intrepid space exploration to pop culture icons, luxury cars to architectural masterpieces, there’s a LEGO set waiting for you. So unplug, unbox, and unwind...Maybe you built LEGO sets as a child and never stopped, maybe you took a break from the bricks but have rediscovered the joy, or maybe you began your LEGO hobby as an adult. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy LEGO sets as an adult, the main thing is that you do."

And here's something you probably didn't know also existed: LEGO adult parties. "The joy of LEGO building isn’t just in the construction – it’s about the laughter, conversation, and magic moments along the way. So, gather your loved ones, pour out those bricks, and let’s get this party started! Whether you’re planning a lively night with friends, a cozy night in with a special someone, or a family reunion, LEGO sets are here to save the day!"

And now, returning to today's significance...one of the most interesting LEGO sets can be found in LEGO's architecture category: Bavaria's Neuschwanstein Castle. According to the product specs, "Dive into your passion for iconic landmarks with this collectible 3,455-piece LEGO Architecture Neuschwanstein Castle building set for adults. The build is full of surprises from the exterior spires, turrets, courtyard, staircases, and gabled roofs to the small interior builds. Plus, the foliage of the surrounding trees can be changed to depict either a summer or fall landscape. This 3,455-piece architecture display model of Neuschwanstein Castle measures over 12 in. (31 cm) high, 18 in. (46 cm) wide and 8 in. (20 cm) deep."

So how will you celebrate International Castle Day today? If you visit a castle, share your photos and memories on social media with today's hashtag #InternationalCastleDay!

Celebrate International Tartan Day with an Email Marketing Tip!

As I've written a number of times here on my blog, when done well, email marketing can be a successful way to reach your brand's target audience. However, due to the number of emails that arrive in everyone's crowded email box on a daily basis, how can one solitary email capture a reader's attention? It turns out that a well-written subject line plus surprising content may just do the trick.

According to Statistica, "People send and receive around 333 billion emails every single day. And that number’s only going up — by 2026, it’s expected to reach a staggering 392.5 billion daily emails. Daily email volume varies significantly by country, with the U.S. leading the pack at 9.7 billion emails sent daily. European countries such as Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, the UK, and France each send over eight billion emails every day." And according to CRMGroup, "Nearly 50 percent of consumers made a purchase directly from an email in the past year. This confirms email’s direct impact on driving sales."

Recently, I received an email with a subject line and content that stood out. However, before we get to the email, a quick note about today's significance: Today is International Tartan Day, a date that was founded to commemorate the anniversary of the repeal of the 1747 Act of Proscription that banned wearing a tartan. Celebrated annually in Australia and New Zealand on the 1st of July, it's an opportunity for people of Scottish descent to proudly show off their Scottish roots. Now, back to the memorable email.

_______

SUBJECT LINE: A Special Thank You Gift from Great Scot

EMAIL CONTENT:

Thank you for all the LOVE.

We've been genuinely overwhelmed by the love you've shown since the launch of the Greenland Tartan. It has travelled further and faster than we ever imagined, shipped to Royals, celebrities, and diplomats, and most importantly to so many true lovers of the Arctic, both in Greenland and all over the world.

And then something made us laugh (and nod in agreement). So many of you have said some version of: "Could the polar bears and huskies please come with it?" As in...wrapped up in your scarf with you, or curled up on your picnic basket!

So, by way of a thank you, for the next 7 days only, we're sending a very plush soft toy along with qualifying orders. Your choice of Murdo (the plush Arctic husky) or Magnus (the plush polar bear).

Here's how it works: Purchase a Greenland scarf or a picnic blanket, then add your free friend. Next, enter discount code ARCTIC at checkout - and we'll tuck them into your parcel.

_______

The subject line caught my attention, and as a previous customer (who purchased the Pink Ribbon Tartan), I opened the email. After I read it, I had to smile. While I had not purchased the advertised Tartan scarf or blanket - and did not intend to do so - I appreciated the marketing promotion for its creativity and add-on that was guaranteed to be enjoyed by both children and adults.

The brand, Great Scot, sells tartans and tweeds from Scotland, and according to its website, "For many people, tartans and tweeds hold sentimental value, often being passed down through generations. They are not just textiles but carriers of personal and family histories." So, the complimentary addition of an appropriately-themed plush toy to a purchase was a great idea. Big applause to Great Scot for this marketing campaign!

What can your brand learn and apply from this brand's effective email marketing?

Happy Lunar New Year 2026 and Year of the Horse!

Gung Hay Fat Choy, or translated into Cantonese: "Wishing you prosperity."

2026 is the Year of the Horse, or more specifically, the Fire Horse, and is celebrated around the world beginning today. It's an annual 15-day festival that begins with the new moon that occurs between January 21st and February 20th according to Western calendars - and festivities last until the following full moon.

According to the Calgary Herald, "Horses enjoy socialization. Finding one’s own herd, or group of friends or supporters, could rank high on the agenda, according to several horoscope predictions for 2026. The high-spirited nature of horses also points to a year ahead of social activity, group travel, and joint projects at work. Rather than it being a year to cocoon, predictions are that it could be a year to embrace change and look for new opportunities."

The Fire Horse symbolizes freedom, adventure, and passion - and people born under this sign are known for their energetic and independent personalities. Celebrities born in years of the Horse include Paul McCartney, Barbra Streisand, Harrison Ford, Jerry Seinfeld, Jackie Chan, John Travolta, and Denzel Washington.

Here’s some trivia about horses:

(1) The United States is home to the most horses in the world, according to the World Population Review. It has 10.3 million horses, followed by Mexico at 6.4 million and Brazil at 5.8 million.

(2) Mongolia is said to have 4.8 million horses, compared to its population of 3.5 million people, due to the country’s reliance on horses for transportation, economic output, partnership with nomadic herders, and cultural significance. The country has a traditional saying that reinforces the horse’s importance in that culture: “A Mongol without a horse is like a bird without wings.”

(3) Horses can live an average of 25 to 30 years.

(4) Horses can have an average running speed of 48 km/h (30 mph), but those bred for racing can run more than 80 km/h (50 mph) for short periods of time.

(5) Queen Elizabeth II started riding at age three and was a remarkable horsewoman.

According to Travel+Leisure, here's how the holiday is celebrated throughout Asia:

"Celebrations around CHINA primarily take place on New Year's Eve, with families coming together to mark the occasion. It's custom to wear new clothes to ring in the new year, usually in the lucky colors, red and gold. In northern China, traditional food eaten during Lunar New Year is made using flour, like baos, pancakes, noodles, and dumplings. Families often make these dishes from scratch. The dumplings are usually served with fish, as it symbolizes abundance for the year ahead, and sometimes contain a lucky coin that kids eagerly search for. Throughout China, family members give each other red envelopes with money as well."

"In KOREA, the Lunar New Year is a three-day event offering a chance to pay respect to ancestors and elders. In Korean culture, people have an official age based on their birthday, but they also historically had a Korean age, which started at one on the day they were born and increased every first day of the year after that. Children show their respect to elders with deep bows (aka seh bae). As part of the celebration, children also receive money and words of wisdom for the forthcoming year."

"In VIETNAM, Lunar New Year is spent with family. Just like other countries, Vietnam has its own traditional attire, a silk tunic with slits on either side that's worn over pants by both men and women for the New Year. Most families go to the temple together to pray for good luck, health, and fortune. Some superstitions include paying off all your debts and cleaning your house before the new year, as well as not throwing anything away on New Year's Day, as it's considered to be getting rid of good luck. Children receive red envelopes with money from their older relatives, too."

"In SINGAPORE, where the population is approximately 75 percent Chinese, red envelopes that display the phrase "Fú" (meaning good luck) are distributed. It's also custom to pay respect to ancestors by going to a temple and lighting incense. The annual Chingay Parade is an extravagant celebration that includes everything from giant floats to lion dancers. Meanwhile, the largest Chinese New Year festival in Singapore is the River Hongbao, which is hosted at different locations across the country."

"In MALAYSIA, Lunar New Year welcomes spring. It lasts for 15 days, ending with a grand finale day called Chap Goh Mei. Red pocket envelopes (known as ang pow) are given to children and unmarried family members. Many Buddhist families invite lion dancers to their homes to bless their altars and ward off bad spirits. People in Malaysia don traditional outfits, called cheongsam (also known as qipao). They say that if you're celebrating your zodiac year, you should wear the color gold to attract even more abundance."

"TAIWAN is another country that strongly associates the holiday with food. Dumplings are the most popular dish, closely followed by pineapple. It's considered good luck to not eat all the fish and keep some leftovers from your holiday meals. Most Taiwanese people spend time with family and their elders in their homes. They exchange red envelopes, and many neighborhoods set off fireworks."

"When the clock strikes midnight in the PHILIPPINES, children and adults jump for joy, as it's thought to make them grow taller. The most traditional celebration is called Media Noche, a midnight feast to summon a year of prosperity. The table is usually full of round-shaped fruits — a tradition that originates from China — as the shape represents family unity. One of the most unique superstitions is that wearing polka dots will bring prosperity, money, and good fortune, because of their round shape. Fireworks are also set off to create loud noises that scare away bad spirits, while lights are turned on and windows and doors are left open. Many people avoid spending money on the first day of the year to encourage better finances."

Will your brand add a horse or the color red (because the Chinese believe red brings good luck, prosperity, and wards off evil) into your logo, mascot, promotions, or communications?

Here are 15 brands that are participating in the festive celebrations:

MATTEL'S BARBIE

Toy brand Mattel dazzled again with its annual "Lunar New Year Barbie." According to the brand's website, "Barbie honors the traditions of the Lunar New Year with this latest holiday doll, dressed for a celebration in an elegant gown artfully designed with symbolic details. Draped in bright red, she’s channeling extra luck, while a gold peony print portrays the symbols of prosperity and honor. The gown’s bodice features a fan-like design, a stylistic interpretation of the fans used in traditional dances and given as gifts for the Lunar New Year. The look is finished with a sheer golden shawl, bold earrings with traditional Chinese symbology, and a stunning long sleek hairstyle. The doll designer was Joyce Chen, and the packaging designer was Laydiana Chiv."

According to Barbie doll designer Joyce Chen, "Being able to design the Lunar New Year Barbie series has felt really impactful for both me as a designer and to the consumer market that has always been yearning for more representation in the doll category. Growing up as an Asian American, I feel like it was rare to find toys or dolls that I could connect with. Being able to design the Lunar New Year dolls has been so meaningful for me because I can get in touch with and be inspired by my own culture. I also see how important it is for others when they have a doll that they can relate to. It makes me happy to create such a special Barbie for a holiday that is celebrated by many...I love seeing the continued growth of diversity and representation in dolls, and hope that one day every person in the world can find a doll they connect with."

Multicolor stitching on the Swoosh of each carries the palette of a pastoral sunset tag on the tongue. However, not everything is one note in this capsule, as the Air Force 1 Low also gets on the board with a more cutesy variation. Cheery horses act as spots atop a white base, while a furry Swoosh literally interprets the assignment. The LD-1000 utilizes the earlier embroidery on its Swoosh and adds worn texturing to its body for an overall simple red/white look, and the P-6000 closes out with an equestrian palette of grey and tan."

Set contains 132 pieces. Once complete, the horse can be used as an eye-catching display model for kids to proudly show off."

And remember, according to ChinaHighlights.com, do not give a clock or watch as a Lunar New Year gift. "Clocks and watches symbolize running out of time. This is especially an uncomfortable reminder for seniors. Giving a clock or watch as a gift is the biggest no-no in Chinese culture."

Next year, the Year of the Sheep will begin on February 6, 2027. So, for all brands who plan to integrate Lunar New Year into your marketing campaigns, brand identity, or brand messaging, start counting the days!

Recap of Flavors and Colors for 2026

At the end of 2025, many brands announced their highlights of the year for 2025, for example, TIME Magazine and several dictionaries. However, other brands looked forward rather than backward. Here is a recap of the brands that looked toward 2026 by sharing their flavor and color trends for 2026.

MCCORMICK'S FLAVOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2026

Since 2000, the McCormick Flavor Forecast has identified the global trends shaping the future of flavor.  According to the brand's website on December 9th, "For 2026, we’re celebrating Black Currant as the Flavor of the Year. Black Currant berries are native to central and northern Europe and northern Asia. They combine tart-and-tangy with a sweet, fruity flavor that's earthy, slightly floral, and herbal. The dark purple fruit has been popular for centuries in specific regions as an ingredient in jams, syrups, candies, desserts, drinks, and liqueurs. It's quickly gaining popularity and is forecast to show up on global menus soon."

TORANI'S FLAVOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2026

According to FoodDive, "Specialty syrup manufacturer Torani declared its flavor of the year for 2026: FOREST PINE. Every year since 2022, Torani produces a flavor meant to predict the next big taste trend among consumers. The choice of forest pine for 2026 reflects growing demand for botanical flavors and nature-inspired, sensory-rich experiences. Forest pine blends flavors of pine, ginger and sage with the goal of capturing "the essence of the outdoors." The flavor will be added to Torani’s Puremade syrup lineup, which uses cane sugar and colors from natural sources. Although pine is typically associated with the winter season, Torani said its flavor is meant to be enjoyed all year long. The company said it would dedicate 100 percent of profits from the forest pine syrup to seven nonprofit organizations offering work readiness opportunities, many of them connected to the outdoors."

M&M'S FLAVOR VOTE: BAKERY COLLECTION LAUNCHES IN JANUARY 2026

The M&M's Flavor Vote is a limited-edition rollout of never-before-seen flavors. During the promotion, M&M's asks fans to try the new flavors and vote for their favorite. Previous installments of the contest saw the limited release of Thai Coconut Peanut, Mexican Jalapeno Peanut, and Crunchy Raspberry flavors, with English Toffee Peanut, Crunchy Mint, and M&M's Coffee Nut flavors among those to be crowned winners.

Beginning in January, fans are being asked to choose 2026’s flavor from a new "Bakery Collection." The three new flavors are Peanut Butter Cinnamon Roll, Cherry Chocolate Cupcake, and Lemon Meringue Pie. According to All Recipes, "M&M’s new Flavor Vote offerings hit shelves in January 2026. Customers can try the new flavors and then vote for their favorite using the QR code located on the packaging. The winning flavor will see an extended run, while the two losers will join the Flavor Vote graveyard."

OREO ZERO SUGAR COOKIES LAUNCH IN JANUARY 2026

And before we pivot from flavors to colors, OREO announced during December that it would unveil its "OREO Zero Sugar Cookies" beginning in January. For the first time in the U.S, shoppers can find Oreo Zero Sugar cookies on retail shelves as part of the brand's permanent lineup. According to the brand, the treat will have the same taste fans love but with a sugar-free sweetener blend. According to All Recipes, "Oreo Zero Sugar cookies are free of aspartame and are instead sweetened with a blend of maltitol, polydextrose, sucralose, and ace-K, also known as acesulfame potassium. These are commonly found in sugar-free food and beverages, such as Hershey's Zero Sugar Chocolate Candy and Diet Coke Lime. For this launch, you won't see the standard resealable packaging. Instead, the cookies will be in a stand-up bag with individually wrapped servings. It will contain 10 2-count Oreo packs, making it easy to keep your cookies fresh and snack on the go."

PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2026

Pantone Color Institute announced its 2026 Color of the Year on December 4th. Recognized as the global color authority, Pantone chose CLOUD DANCER, Pantone 11-4201, the first time a shade of white has been chosen since it began naming a color of the year back in 1999. According to TIME Magazine, "This year’s pick is meant to represent serenity and tranquility, which Pantone says is ever in need in a frenetic society. Cloud dancer calls back to the need for human connection."

According to wedding planner Muriel Saldalamacchia, Cloud Dancer brings a fresh perspective to a color long associated with weddings, "Cloud Dancer isn’t just a color—it’s an invitation to let white breathe, move, and tell a new story. It’s white, but with a soul."

ETSY COLOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2026

The online e-commerce brand Etsy announced its 2026 color of the year on December 10th: Patina Blue, a quietly saturated blue-green inspired by the way copper naturally ages over time. According to Decor, "This hue is meant to capture a growing appetite for pieces that feel lived-in rather than pristine, echoing a broader shift toward objects that wear in, not out. According to Etsy, searches for “blue copper” have climbed more than threefold over the past year. Chemically, the patina that forms on copper is the result of oxidation and exposure to the elements, gradually transforming the metal from bright, reflective orange to a matte blue-green surface. That change has long received acclaim on historic roofs, statuary, and architectural details, where the softened color signals age, authenticity, and a certain lived-in gravitas. By translating that effect into a color story for 2026, Etsy is aligning itself with a larger move in interiors and decor toward finishes that feel layered and enduring. Patina Blue also arrives at a moment when many color narratives are pivoting away from shock value. Instead of a high-contrast statement shade, Etsy’s pick leans into nuance—a color that can read coastal, industrial, or vintage, depending on how it’s deployed. Because the choice is informed by real-time marketplace behavior rather than a purely top-down forecast, it reflects how shoppers are already decorating: layering aged blues with warm metals, natural materials, and a mix of old and new pieces. In that sense, Patina Blue is less a directive and more a confirmation that the next chapter of color is about evolution, subtlety, and the quiet depth that earns its place over time."

IKEA COLOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2026

According to Apartment Therapy, "Swedish furniture brand IKEA announced its 2026 Color of the Year as Rebel Pink, a hue that brings "a bold response to the need for joy, energy, and self-expression," explained Abbey Stark, home furnishing direction leader at IKEA U.S. "When selecting Rebel Pink as the Color of the Year for 2026, we looked deeply into macro trends across design, fashion, and culture, and how they influence life in our homes. We see [Rebel Pink] as a new neutral that energizes everyday spaces while staying true to Scandinavian simplicity; it’s not just a color, it’s a movement that invites people to push boundaries and embrace individuality.” The color is heavily featured in the new GREJSIMOJS collection, a set created by 12 designers that celebrates the importance of joy and play for both kids and adults.

BENJAMIN MOORE COLOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2026

The following news was announced back in October but is included due to all the other OF THE YEAR announcements. The paint color brand announced SILHOUETTE AF-655 as its color of the year for 2026 and described it as "a distinctive color that weaves luxurious burnt umber with delicate notes of charcoal."

SHERWIN-WILLIAMS COLOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2026

For the first time, Sherwin-Williams and its sister brand HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams teamed up to reveal a joint 2026 color of the year. The news was announced back in September but is included due to all the other OF THE YEAR announcements. The two brands announced UNIVERSAL KHAKI SW 6150 as their color of the year for 2026 and described it as "a tailored and timeless neutral with the endless possibility of a fresh canvas."

AKZONOBEL'S COLORS OF THE YEAR FOR 2026

The following news was announced back in September but is included due to all the other OF THE YEAR announcements. First though, did you know that this brand has been around since 1792? According to the paint color brand's website, "It’s time to dance to the Rhythm of Blues™ and celebrate AkzoNobel’s Colors of the Year 2026 – an upbeat and versatile color family that’s calming, connecting and creative. There’s a trio of shades for next year – the light blue Mellow Flow, the dark blue Slow Swing, and the vibrant Free Groove – so everyone can find a style that works for them. LITTLE GREENE'S COLOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2026

The following news was announced back in September but is included due to all the other OF THE YEAR announcements. First though, did you know that this brand is a 300-year-old family-run business in Northern Wales? The brand chose ADVENTURER, a regal plum aubergine very similar to burgundy, as its color of the year for 2026 and explained that "it combines sophistication with comfort and works well as an accent wall in bedrooms, bold powder rooms, or dining areas, and pairs beautifully with neutrals or pale pinks."

According to Ruth Mothershead, creative director at Little Greene, "The movement toward burgundy represents customers' growing confidence with color in their homes. Adventurer provides that perfect balance of regal sophistication and intimate comfort."

GRAHAM & BROWN'S COLOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2026

The following news was announced in September but is included due to all the other OF THE YEAR announcements. The leading British interiors brand announced DIVINE DAMSON as its own color of the year for 2026 and explained, "The deep, plum shade is designed to work on its own or be paired with a more subtle, complementary color like gray. The dark, moody red is a mix of oxblood, cherry, and mocha brown (a color trend that also defined 2025), with a touch of deep aubergine (a color that's growing in popularity). The color was inspired by the lush tones of ripe damson and figs."

VALSPAR COLOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2026

The following news was announced in August but is included due to all the other OF THE YEAR announcements. The paint brand announced WARM EUCALYPTUS 8004-28F as its color of the year for 2026 and explained, "Sometimes a color gives you a warm feeling inside. And out. This year, that color is our 2026 Color of the Year — naturally restorative and serene Warm Eucalyptus."

GLIDDEN COLOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2026

The following news was announced in August but is included due to all the other OF THE YEAR announcements. The paint brand announced WARM MAHOGANY as its color of the year for 2026 and explained, "Warm Mahogany is a rich, grounded red that’s bold enough to draw immediate attention and reserved enough to make a timeless statement. Any style, any space, any mood."

According to Ashley McCollum, color marketing manager at Glidden, "The color can be both intimate and dramatic and is a timeless color that aligns with Glidden’s 150-year heritage."

BEHR PAINT COLOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2026

The following news was announced back in July but is included due to all the other OF THE YEAR announcements. The paint color brand announced HIDDEN GEM N430-6A as its color of the year for 2026 and described it as "a smoky jade that embodies an air of mystery and sophistication."

DUTCH BOY PAINTS' COLOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2026

The following news was announced back in April but is included due to all the other OF THE YEAR announcements. The paint color brand announced MELODIUS IVORY 313-2DB as its color of the year for 2026 and explained, "This creamy beige pairs effortlessly with various materials, including wood, cozy textiles, and handmade crafts, which support the rise of slow living and nostalgia-inspired aesthetics."

Five Memorable Ads from 2025

During 2025, there were many ads that stood out as memorable. I recall some ads based on their creativity, their products, their featured celebrities, and most importantly, their messages. In a continuing series of posts here on my Blog during January in which I've shared marketing highlights from 2025, brand identity changes during 2025, words and terms from 2025, and more, today, let's review my choices for the five most memorable ads from last year.

HOME DEPOT

According to Marketing Dive, "For the first time, the home improvement retailer is featuring the real farmers it partners with in its creative to tell a story about helping families find the right Christmas tree. "The Right Tree" is a 30-second spot that begins as a family member bundles up a young boy in preparation for a Christmas tree search. The ad then shows a tree’s journey from the farm to Home Depot, later featuring the young boy again as he chooses the tree as his perfect fit."

AMAZON

According to AdWeek, "Three lifelong friends sit on a snowy bench watching children sledding. One of the women fires up her Amazon app and orders three sled-worthy seat cushions. A few days later, the cushions arrive, and before you can say “it’s festive advertising time,” the three friends are barreling down the slope with grins that threaten to outshine the Christmas lights. A string version of the tender Beatles classic “In My Life” plays as the old friends are briefly, magically, transformed into children once again. The ad debuted back in 2023 and quickly found footing as Amazon’s most lauded holiday effort. But what makes the ad interesting now is that Amazon has decided to bring it back as its main emotional brand-building commercial for 2025."

HELLMANN'S

According to Ispottv, "Thirty-five years after "When Harry Met Sally," Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal return to Katz's Delicatessen to enjoy a meal. Sitting at a familiar table, the two begin eating. Meg takes a bite of her sandwich and immediately makes a displeased face. "What, no good?" Billy asks. She shakes her head, grabs a bottle of Best Foods mayonnaise from the table, squeezes a generous amount onto the sandwich, and takes another bite. This time, she lets out a loud, satisfied moan, pounding the table as she chews. "Here we go," Billy quips, remembering the last time they sat at this restaurant. Other diners quiet their conversations and turn to look at Meg's evocative and exaggerated display of enjoyment. At a nearby table, Sydney Sweeney, eyes wide open, drops her jaw and tells a server, 'I'll have what she's having.'"

AMERICAN EAGLE

As reported by AP, "U.S. fashion retailer American Eagle Outfitters wanted to make a splash with its new advertising campaign starring 27-year-old actress Sydney Sweeney. Titled "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans," the campaign sparked a debate about race, Western beauty standards, and the backlash to "woke" American politics and culture. Most of the negative reception focused on videos that used the word "genes" instead of "jeans" when discussing the blonde-haired, blue-eyed actress known for her two HBO series. Some critics saw the wordplay as a nod, either unintentional or deliberate, to eugenics, a discredited theory that held humanity could be improved through selective breeding for certain traits...Eugenics gained popularity in early 20th century America, and Nazi Germany embraced it to carry out Adolf Hitler's plan for an Aryan master race."

Marcus Collins, an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, said, "The criticism could have been avoided if the ads showed models of various races making the "genes" pun. You can either say this was ignorance, laziness, or intentional. Either one of the three isn't good."

Miles Worthington, founder and CEO of marketing and creative agency WORTHI, said, "They were probably thinking that this is going to be their moment. But this [buzz] is doing the opposite and deeply distorting their brand. It's so clear that they didn't have anybody in the room that poked and prodded at this ad. I would bet all the dollars in the world that it was a very white, very privileged room [full of] people who didn't ask the right questions."

A final note, American Eagle defended the ad on Instagram in an attempt to stop the criticism: "[The] Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans" [campaign] is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone."

And did you know that Canadian singer/songwriter Shania Twain partnered with McDonald's Canada during August?

MCDONALD'S CANADA

According McDonald's Canada's website, "McDonald’s Canada and Shania Twain are turning up the flavor on two fan favorites, because you’re never too dressed up to go to McDonald’s and when you add a touch of style, even the best, feel-good moments get a delightful upgrade. For a limited time, McDonald’s classics are getting all dressed up, Shania’s way, with fan-favorite menu items and a keepsake that brings her flair. For Shania, the collaboration is more than just a campaign, it’s a full-circle moment. Before becoming a global country superstar, Shania worked as a McDonald’s crew member in Toronto, making this partnership a heartfelt nod to her roots."

Shania Twain explained, "This collaboration feels like a homecoming for me. I fell in love with McDonald’s fries while working as a crew member in Toronto, so being able to dress them up with my personal touch was surreal. Whether you’re enjoying your All Dressed McShaker Fries, or gearing up for a big moment, life is just more exciting when you’re all dressed up."

The campaign featured two new menu items: "All Dressed McShaker Fries" made from 100 percent Canadian potatoes with a flavor makeover and a "Strawberry Pie" containing real strawberry pieces in a warm, flaky golden brown crust. An exclusive "Cowboy Boot Keychain" was also available for a limited time:  a playful, limited-edition keepsake that fans could clip onto a tote, add to keys, or wear as a bag charm.

Don't forget, a month from today is the best day for ads and marketing fans, Super Bowl Sunday!

Why be a social media influencer?

Have you ever considered being a social media influencer? You know, the type of people who post on their social networks on a VERY regular basis — mostly with photos of them wearing colorful clothing or eating interesting food or simply talking to their smartphones. However, there are different types of social media influencers, and the Toronto Zoo in Canada invites visitors to be what they call "ZOOfluencers."

But first, did you know that today is VISIT THE ZOO DAY? The first public zoo was the Vienna Zoo, which opened in 1752 and remains one of the oldest zoos currently in operation. Some zoos use surprising animals as ambassadors. For instance, the San Diego Zoo features sloths, porcupines, and Madagascar hissing cockroaches to teach about conservation. And zoos in snowy regions like the Detroit Zoo create climate-controlled enclosures for tropical animals such as penguins and flamingos. And some species, like the Hawaiian crow, exist only in zoos with the aim of re-introducing them to their natural habitats.

Here's what the Toronto Zoo's website says:

_______________________________________________

Our hope is that as a “ZOOfluencer,” you will partner with us in being a "Guardian of Wild," where you’ll proudly share our mission of connecting people, animals, conservation science, and traditional knowledge to fight extinction.

The Toronto Zoo is Canada’s premier Zoo and home to over 3,000 animals representing 290 species. Our vision is a world where people, wildlife, and wild spaces thrive, and we are happy to partner with individuals who will work with us to proudly amplify our mission.

Whether you're a digital specialist passionate about wildlife and conservation, a family seeking adventure, or someone in the GTA (Greater Toronto area) looking for a fun day out — you'll find a story worth sharing at your Toronto Zoo.

Influencers who are chosen to partner with us each receive complimentary admission (details follow) and free parking. Please note that your Toronto Zoo is a not-for-profit organization that partners with the Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy. Regretfully, our influencer opportunities are not paid. We ask that participants produce high-quality and engaging content highlighting their visit to the Zoo and, where applicable, their experience at special events that are hosted on site. The Toronto Zoo may use and repost content, with credit given where possible.

Specific instructions will be provided to each influencer, but general requirements for content are as follows:

Photographers: A minimum of 3 photos must be shared within 5 days of visit with tag @TheTorontoZoo on social media platforms.

Videographers: Footage must be posted within 5 days of visit with tag @TheTorontoZoo on social media platforms.

Bloggers: Content must include a detailed blog post, created on your website (500 words + photos taken during the visit). Blog posts must be published within 5 days of the visit. Content must be shared across social channels that writers maintain. Links to content must be shared with Toronto Zoo’s Strategic Communications team.

Influencers: Influencers must post 3 - 4 pictures/videos plus 1 to 2 stories/live updates on their social platforms highlighting their experience at the Toronto Zoo. All content must tag @TheTorontoZoo and use the specified hashtags determined by the Strategic Communications team. Vloggers must publish video content no later than a week after a visit. Links to content must be shared with Toronto Zoo’s Strategic Communications team.

THE TORONTO ZOO'S EVALUATION:

Lions Roar: 1 Million + = Complimentary admission for you and up to six guests + a Behind-The-Scenes VIP Tour

Grizzly’s Growl: 500k-1 Million = Complimentary admission for family up to six people + a complimentary Wild Encounter

Owls Hoot: 50-500k = Complimentary admission for family up to six people

Birds Chirp: 10k-50k = Complimentary admission for up to four people

The number of followers is based on Instagram and/or TikTok. A case-by-case review may include YouTube.

Thank you for your interest! If you’d like to apply, please fill out the form. Only those selected will be contacted for next steps. If contacted, please note that it may take up to six weeks prior to your scheduled work visit.

Will Your Brand Commemorate September 11?

If you were alive on September 11, 2001, your life was forever changed by the events in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in rural Pennsylvania. Terrorism arrived in the United States - and the country would never be the same.

This September marks the 24th anniversary of that tragedy, and while war and terrorism still exist, we will always remember the people who perished on that September morning. And we will always celebrate the first responders who rushed into harm's way.

In those first few days after September 11, 2001, brands added an American flag to their homepages with messages of condolences. Since social media did not exist like it does today, there were no Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram posts that gained hundreds of thousands of comments, likes, or retweets. But today is different. Social media has provided opportunities for everyone's voices to be heard.

On September 11, 2012, President Barack Obama proclaimed the date as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. U.S. government buildings flew their American flags at half-staff, and Americans were urged to perform a day of service to make a positive difference in their communities.

2025 marks the 18th year that Malibu's Pepperdine University will showcase the annual Waves of Flags, a display of 2,977 full-size flags. There are 2,887 American flags for each American life lost and 90 international flags representing the home countries of those from abroad who died.

And no one can forget Budweiser's ad featuring the iconic Clydesdales that aired only once - during the 2002 Super Bowl. "The horses pay tribute to the memory of the fallen of September 11th with an unforgettable, breath-taking bow. Many have never forgotten the commercial that never aired again...[Budweiser] had to get approval from members of Congress, the ad community, and from New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani."

While some in the marketing arena think it best for brands to remain silent on September 11, consumers look to brands to make an emotional connection. This is because when a connection is made, often long-term loyalty happens.

On this very important day in American history, people tend to remember the brands that speak out. So, will your brand speak out to commemorate September 11?

Branding Tip: Use an Ampersand!

Do you like grammar? If yes, then you already know today's significance. If not, allow me to enlighten you: Today is National Ampersand Day. If you need a refresher, an ampersand is that recognizable symbol that stands in for the word AND.

When creating a memorable business or nonprofit name, there are many considerations and influences, but if you want to join two names or words, what can you do? An ampersand is the solution.

According to Wikipedia, "The ampersand is a logogram representing the word AND (a conjunction). It originated as a ligature of the letters ET, Latin for AND...In written language, a logogram is a written character that represents a word or phrase."

Curious as to where the ampersand originated? According to Dictionary.com, "The symbol "&" was actually part of the English alphabet. In the early 1800's, school children reciting their ABC's concluded the alphabet with the &. It would have been confusing to say X, Y, Z, and. Rather, the students said, "and per se and." Per se means "by itself," so the students were essentially saying, X, Y, Z, and by itself and. Over time, "and per se and" was slurred together into the word we use today: ampersand."

According to Nicte Cuevas, Principal of Nicte Creative Design, "Each brand featuring an ampersand in its logo has a unique approach. Some use the same font as the brand name (logotype), while others use a completely different font for the ampersand. The style for these depends on the emphasis that the brand wants to create with the ampersand. Using an ampersand can provide added benefits, aside from aesthetics. If a brand name is slightly long, using an ampersand will help shorten the length of the logotype. This means you don't sacrifice legibility for size, especially for web and digital media."

How many brands featuring ampersands immediately come to mind? Here's a list to get you started:

• A&W Root Beer

• AT&T

• Barnes & Noble Booksellers

• Ben & Jerry’s

• H&R Block

• M&M'S

• Tiffany & Co.

• Victoria & Albert Museum

While there are countless ways for a brand to stand out, the ampersand is a unique brand identifier. It's so much more than a space saver. In fact, it just may get your brand noticed!

Brand Alignment Lessons (and Opportunities) from Taylor Swift

Unless you live under a rock, you've already heard the news that singer/songwriter/entrepreneur Taylor Swift and her NFL football boyfriend Travis Kelce are now engaged.

The two shared the news on Instagram with several photos and a cute message that "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married," and immediately, the world went wild. The level of interest in this announcement rivals the engagement announcement of England's former Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.

According to Brianne Fleming, author of the marketing newsletter By Popular Demand, "Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are such a power couple that their influence touches countless brands and industries. From cities she's toured to stadiums she's filled — and even food brands joking about catering the wedding — everyone is looking for a way to tie themselves in. It makes sense that brands are reacting to Swift's engagement because it's an opportunity not only to promote themselves but to share in fans' excitement...These days, to know your audience is to know pop culture. If you want your audience to love you, you have to understand what they love — and a good majority of them probably love Taylor Swift."

I've said many times here on my blog that, "Brands that are able to align their products or services to an event, holiday, or trending news story that everyone is talking about have the potential to be memorable."

So, without further ado, here's a recap of the brands that truly understand how to align themselves with trending news.

CHEESECAKE FACTORY

On Instagram, one image with comments overlayed on one of the famous photos shared by Taylor and Travis - a big hug: Taylor was "ME" and Travis was "CHEESECAKE FACTORY BROWN BREAD."

PILLSBURY

On Instagram, three images of the Pillsbury Dough Boy saying "SHE'S ENGAGED;" a sweet roll with "AND THE RING IS GORGEOUS;" and the Dough Boy holding a bouquet of hearts, footballs, and croissants with the caption, "I PRESENT THE HAPPY COUPLE WITH A CONGRATULATORY DOUGH-QUET!!!"

INVISALIGN

On Instagram, the photo caption "Baby just say yes to your most confident wedding day smile."

HERSHEYS CHOCOLATE KISSES

On Instagram, two bags of Hershey's kisses with the words "CELEBRATE." In addition, the message "Hershey's kisses in bulk will be a delight at any wedding."

SHAKESHACK

On Instagram, an onion ring was placed on a woman's ring finger. Two additional photos featured onion rings. And the message was "Look what you made us do. Coming soon..."

PANERA BREAD

On Instagram, the caption on top of a photo of bread was "She said yeast. A real life loaf story."

AUNTIE ANNE'S

On Twitter/X, the post was "CAN I BE THE FLOWER GIRL?"

MERRIAM-WEBSTER

On Twitter/X, the post was "Your English teacher's favorite book and your gym teacher's favorite book are getting married." The image was in the same flower garden as the couple but featured Webster's Sports Dictionary and Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.

ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA

On Twitter/X, the post was "Yes, we already updated their bios to engaged."

EMPIRE STATE BUILDING

On Twitter/X, the post was "Where can I apply to be the wedding venue?"

Marcus Collins, a professor at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, wasn't surprised by all the brands that chimed in, but he was not impressed. He said, "Historically, brands have benefitted from quickly reacting to what's in the zeitgeist, like Oreo's famous "you can still dunk in the dark" Tweet during the 2013 Super Bowl blackout. But those successes have led brands to jump headlong into cultural conversations even when they have nothing to do with them. It's like we're jumping on things to be opportunistic, not to contribute anything."

However, Collins said that some brands still manage to strike the right balance when responding to pop culture phenomena, including the engagement news this week. He tipped his hat to Ralph Lauren, the designer of the black-and-white striped dress that Swift wore in her engagement photos. The retailer knocked the price down about 20 percent on its website, and it sold out in under 20 minutes. He said, "The brands that will be successful will be the ones that can find relevance and context with regards to the happening and what the brand is, beyond what it does. And the brands that will continue to [work against] themselves will be the ones that are, essentially, just jumping on the trends."

While the media and fan focus was on the engagement news, Starbucks chimed in with its own clever post.

STARBUCKS

On Instagram, on top of a backdrop of fall leaves, the caption read, "Are we supposed to keep talking about PSL like nothing happened???" For those who don't know, Starbucks welcomed back its annual Pumpkin Spice Latte on the same day of the engagement news.

Unless the famous couple elopes, the big wedding will serve as another opportunity for brands to chime in. As a marketing pro, I can't wait!

Marketing News of the Week: Advertising, Branding, Community Support, and More

During the last week, there were news stories that reflected advertising, brand identity, community stewardship, employee experience, personal branding, and more.

INSENSITIVE ADVERTISING

According to EuroNews, "Pakistan's national airline has said that an ad campaign showing a plane heading toward the Eiffel Tower was never intended to evoke the memories of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York. The illustration shows a plane superimposed over the French flag and tilted toward the Paris landmark, with the words "Paris, we're coming today." The ad was posted on X by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on 10 January, the day the company resumed flights to European Union countries after a four-year ban by the bloc's aviation safety agency. On January 14th, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar described the ad as an act of "stupidity." PIA spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez said, "We want to make it clear that we had no intention to hurt the feelings of anyone. The Eiffel Tower was shown in the ad because it's one of the best places in the world."

LOS ANGELES WILDFIRES

Due to the catastrophic wildfires that have been raging in the Los Angeles area since January 7th and the destruction they have caused, many organizations have stepped up to provide food and clothing to the people most affected. In addition, many brands have shown their dedication to being thoughtful corporate citizens.

Living Spaces, the furniture company, stated on its website, "We Support LA. Free mattress set for fire victims. As of January 16th, the company has donated 192 mattresses for LA fire relief. According to the website, "We want to extend our heartfelt support to the communities and families impacted by the recent wildfires. Los Angeles is our home, and we stand with you in recovering and rebuilding from the devastation. To help ease the burden, we are offering a Revive Hawaii mattress and foundation in any size to anyone who has lost their home. Just show us your FEMA or insurance paperwork, and we will make sure you have what you need to get a good night’s sleep. From our family to yours, we are here for you."

According to MLB.com, "As devastating wildfires ravage the Los Angeles area, the sports world is hoping to provide whatever help it can for those who have been impacted by the disaster. MLB, other major professional sports leagues and 15 Los Angeles sports organizations are partnering with Fanatics to produce an "LA Strong" merchandise collection, beginning with t-shirts and expanding to other products. Fanatics and the participating leagues and teams will not profit from the sale of items in this collection, with donations going directly to the American Red Cross and the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation. The American Red Cross provides assistance to those affected by the fires and the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation provides much needed support and equipment to first responders."

The Walt Disney Company committed $15 million to help with response and rebuilding efforts. The money will help services on the ground, such as the American Red Cross, Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, and more. CEO Bob Iger said, "As this tragedy continues to unfold, The Walt Disney Company is committed to supporting our community and our employees as we all work together to recover and rebuild from this unbelievable devastation. Walt Disney came to Los Angeles with little more than his limitless imagination, and it was here that he chose to make his home, pursue his dreams, and create extraordinary storytelling that means so much to so many people around the world."

ROYAL WARRANTS AND PRINCESS OF WALES

In what could easily be called the biggest brand ambassador news from England, according to Tatler, "As reigning monarch, King Charles decides which members of the royal family are permitted to hand out royal warrants, signifying their own personal use of a specific brand. Kate Middleton is set to break from decades of tradition and bestow her first set of royal warrants for the first time ever, it has been confirmed. When the Princess of Wales announces her decisions, it will mark the first time in over 70 years that a royal bearing the title Princess of Wales has had the opportunity to grant the honour – an opportunity that was not bestowed upon Princess Diana.

It's one of the highest honours a British brand can receive: a seal of approval from the Princess of Wales herself, who has said she wishes to recognize British skills and industry. Catherine's impact on the world of British business is monumental. The so-called 'Kate Effect,' referring to the stratospheric uptick in sales of a garment worn by the mother-of-three, has reportedly added one billion pounds to the fashion industry as of 2021. For any brand, be it a style favourite or a technological go-to, receiving an official nod as one of Catherine's personal staples will surely see sales skyrocket.

Over the years, the Princess of Wales has built up a portfolio of preferred brands, especially when it comes to fashion. Many will expect Alexander McQueen, considered Catherine's go-to fashion house, to soon bear her coat of arms. From her Victorian-inspired lace wedding gown designed by creative director Sarah Burton, to the red double-breasted coat that she wore for her milestone return to the Together At Christmas carol concert last December, the Princess of Wales turns to the legendary designer for her most personal of engagements.

As for Catherine, no timeline has been specified for the awards, but brands throughout the country will be waiting with bated breath to see if they might benefit from the 'Kate Effect.' From Mulberry to Manolo Blahnik, Boden to L.K Bennett – for a royal as synonymous with style as the Princess of Wales, the list is both extensive and exclusive."

According to the Independent, "Companies holding a royal warrant are recognised for providing goods or services to the monarchy and are allowed to use the coat of arms of the royal they are associated with on packaging, as part of advertising or on stationery. Companies are also required to demonstrate that they have an appropriate environmental and sustainability policy and action plan – a requirement brought in by Charles as the Prince of Wales. A royal warrant is usually granted for up to five years and reviewed in the year before it is due to expire so that a decision can be made as to whether it should be renewed for another period of up to five years. Last year more than 500 companies were granted royal warrants, a list which was largely drawn from companies that previously held a royal warrant of appointment from Queen Elizabeth II or from King Charles when he was Prince of Wales."

STARBUCKS POLICY

Starbucks announced that it was reversing a 2018 policy that invited everyone into its stores, and now, if you want to hang out or use the restroom at Starbucks, you will have to buy something. Starbucks spokesperson Jaci Anderson said the new rules are designed to help prioritize paying customers, "We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable in our stores. By setting clear expectations for behavior and use of our spaces, we can create a better environment for everyone."

STARBUCKS MISSION

Starbucks announced its new mission statement, "To be the premier purveyor of the finest coffee in the world, inspiring and nurturing the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time."

According to the brand's website, "Our mission statement defines what sets Starbucks apart – our identity and our responsibility in the world. Our name, Starbucks Coffee Company, also captures our role. Coffee reflects our commitment to source, roast and serve the highest-quality coffee, and Company captures our role in bringing people together to inspire and nurture the human spirit. According to Brian Niccol, Chairman and CEO, "When the barista hands the customer their cup of coffee, it is this moment of connection that doesn't happen in any other moment in the day, for a lot of people. The humanity of that moment is really powerful. When you stop and think about it, what are we all about? We provide the best coffee in the world, and we do it with the purpose of having these moments of connection with each other. If we keep it very straightforward – coffee, people and humanity – we're going to be in really good shape."

BAN OF RED DYE

According to Good Housekeeping, "The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revoked the use of Red Dye No. 3 in food and ingested drugs as of January 15th. Over 20 consumer advocacy groups had argued for the removal of Red Dye No. 3 from food and dietary supplements citing studies that high doses of the color additive had been linked to cancer in rats. The move follows California's 2023 ban, which prohibits the sale of foods containing Red Dye No. 3 in the state starting in 2027, and aligns the U.S. with much of the world, including the European Union, Australia and New Zealand, where the dye is already restricted.

Not everything containing Red Dye No. 3 falls into the food categories below. The dye is also used in drugs and dietary supplements. If you're unsure, check the product's ingredient label before purchasing, and keep in mind that Red Dye No. 3 may also be listed as "Red No. 3," "Red 3," or "Red #3."

Common food products that can contain Red Dye No. 3 include:

*Sprinkles

*Icing

*Baking mixes

*Cereals

*Berry- and cherry-flavored candy

*Strawberry milk

*Peppermint candies

*Soda

*Fruit cocktail

*Cookies

*Maraschino cherries

*Smoked sausages, bacon and other types of processed meats

*Ice cream and frozen yogurt treats

*Chewing gum and mints

*Biscuits

*Fruit and vegetable juices

*Seasoning mixes and marinades

MORE MACY'S CLOSURES

Macy's is expected to close 65 locations by the end of 2025, an increase from the 50 locations the company said it would initially close this year. The retailer announced back in February 2024 plans to shut down 150 "underproductive" Macy's store locations by 2026. The plan "is designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth. According to Tony Spring, Macy's Chairman and CEO, "Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing under-productive Macy's stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service."

CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF DEI

Axios reported that Meta (parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads) is eliminating its DEI efforts, effective immediately, including ones that focused on hiring a diverse workforce, training, and sourcing supplies from diverse-owned companies. Its DEI department will also be eliminated. In a memo leaked to the outlet, Meta said it was making these changes because the "legal and policy landscape surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the United States is changing."

DEATH OF BOB UECKER

According to AP, "Bob Uecker, who parlayed a forgettable playing career into a punch line for movie and TV appearances as Mr. Baseball and a Hall of Fame broadcasting tenure, has died at age 90. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement, "Bob was the genuine item: always the funniest person in any room he was in, and always an outstanding ambassador for our national pastime." Uecker was best known as a colorful comedian and broadcaster whose sense of humor and self-deprecating style earned him fame and affection beyond his .200 batting average...Uecker often joked, "Career highlights? I had two. I got an intentional walk from Sandy Koufax and I got out of a rundown against the Mets."...He got his big break off the field after opening for Don Rickles at Al Hirt's nightclub in Atlanta in 1969. That performance caught Hirt's attention, and the musician set him up to appear on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He became one of Carson’s favorite guests, making more than 100 appearances - and it was Carson who dubbed Uecker 'Mr. Baseball.' And the name stuck."

Famous Brands After Thanksgiving

Once Halloween is history, and everyone tires of candy, retailers turn their attention to Thanksgiving and the holiday shopping season.

During November and December, there are four days that stand out, and for me, there are four brands that are particularly memorable.

BLACK FRIDAY

The day after Thanksgiving has become known as "Black Friday," the day that all retailers look forward to all year long because it is the busiest shopping day of the year in the United States.

According to Wikipedia, "Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving and traditionally marks the start of the Christmas shopping season in the United States. Many stores offer highly promoted sales at discounted prices and often open early, sometimes as early as midnight or even on Thanksgiving. It has evolved in meaning and impact over the years since 1869. Initially associated with workforce absenteeism post-Thanksgiving, it was reinterpreted by Philadelphia police to describe the shopping-induced congestion. Attempts at rebranding to "Big Friday" failed, and the term "Black Friday" solidified by the 1980s, referring to the pivotal point where retailers purportedly shifted from loss ("in the red") to profit ("in the black")."

Since so many shoppers line up outside Best Buy stores following their Thanksgiving meals in order to get free televisions or the best deals on electronics on Black Friday when most stores open early, Best Buy stands out as the most memorable brand on Black Friday.

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY

According to the Small Business Administration's website, "Small Business Saturday is a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities. When your dollars stay in your community, you help small businesses thrive and your neighborhood prosper. Founded by American Express in 2010 and officially co-sponsored by SBA since 2011, Small Business Saturday has become an important part of small businesses’ busiest shopping season. Historically, reported projected spending among U.S. consumers who shopped at independent retailers and restaurants on Small Business Saturday reached an estimated $17 billion according to the 2023 Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey commissioned by American Express."

As a lifelong reader, I cannot walk by a bookstore without going in, and nine times out of ten, I will make a purchase. I especially enjoy visiting one-of-a-kind unique bookstores, and a local one is the Iliad Bookstore in Los Angeles, California. According to the store's own description, it is "one of LA's best used bookstores, and its two best bookstore cats." Heck, two of my favorite things are books and cats!

CYBER MONDAY

Over the years, Cyber Monday has become the online equivalent of Black Friday.

According to Wikipedia, "Cyber Monday is a marketing term for e-commerce transactions on the Monday after Thanksgiving in the United States. It was created by retailers to encourage people to shop online. The term was coined by Ellen Davis of the National Retail Federation and Scott Silverman, and made its debut on November 28, 2005, in a Shop.org press release entitled "Cyber Monday Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year." Cyber Monday has become the online equivalent to Black Friday and offers a way for smaller retail websites to compete with larger chains. Since its inception, it has become an international marketing term used by online retailers around the world."

In late November 2005, The New York Times reported: "The name Cyber Monday grew out of the observation that millions of otherwise productive working Americans, fresh off a Thanksgiving weekend of window shopping, were returning to high-speed Internet connections at work Monday and buying what they liked."

As a result of the Covid pandemic, it's much easier ordering items from Amazon than driving to two or three stores, sometimes four or five. Amazon is easy with a capital E-A-S-Y! But on Cyber Monday, the brand becomes even more of a good friend because it transforms the chore of holiday shopping to simple search, click, and buy.

GIVING TUESDAY

Hopefully, people have some money leftover following these three spending days in order to make a difference on Giving Tuesday.

According to Kathy Calvin, former CEO of the United Nations Foundation, "GivingTuesday is a counter narrative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday because it reminds us that the spirit of the holiday season should be about community and not just consumerism. The most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, friends, and neighbors is the commitment to work together to help build a better world."

"New York’s 92nd Street Y was the catalyst and incubator for #GivingTuesday, bringing the expertise of 139 years of community-management to the project and providing #GivingTuesday a home. The United Nations Foundation joined as partners, bringing their strategic and communications clout to the project. Over 2,500 charities, volunteer organizations, corporations, and foundations came together in all 50 US states with one common purpose: to help others and incentivize ways to give more, give smarter, and celebrate the American spirit of contribution. Individuals were encouraged to be generous in whatever ways mattered to them, whether that meant volunteering at a local charity or by donating to a favorite cause."

Some in the nonprofit sector might think that year-long outreach consisting of direct mail letters or cards, newsletters, emails, and annual reports have a bigger impact than a single day with a focus on philanthropy. But let's not forget the impact of publicity – and everyone will be talking about their favorite nonprofits on December 3rd. The other important reminder is that social media will be on fire with the hashtag #GivingTuesday – and millennials, big social networkers, are future philanthropists. The "know your audience" mantra of marketing 101 requires that all nonprofits participate in #GivingTuesday with some type of campaign to target their existing and future donors.

For me, the League of Women Voters is an important nonprofit that deserves everyone's support, especially during this difficult post-election period for many. It's important to remember that, for our democracy to exist and flourish, we must all participate.

According to the League's website, "We believe in the power of women to create a more perfect democracy. That's been our vision since 1920, when the League of Women Voters was founded by leaders of the women's suffrage movement. For 104 years, we have been a nonpartisan, activist, grassroots organization that believes voters should play a critical role in democracy. We work to protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented. We empower voters and defend democracy through advocacy, education, and litigation, at the local, state, and national levels." During the 2024 Presidential election, the League helped to register voters and provided voter information on a myriad of ballot issues. There are over 700 local and state league chapters as well as the national League of Women Voters of the US based in Washington, D.C.

What brands stand out to you during this important week of commerce and philanthropy? Chime in and share.

SHARE THIS: You do not have to be a world leader – or even a billionaire – to make an impact. If we are going to turn things around, we all need to do our part to make it happen. Change starts with you. ~Ted Turner #DebbieLaskeysBlog #GivingTuesday

Let's Celebrate M&M Day!

M&M's have been around since 1941, but do you know how they started? As you think about which color - or plain or peanut on the inside - you favor, let's take a walk down memory lane.

According to company history, after seeing soldiers carrying Smarties, chocolate pellets protected by a shell from keeping them from melting, during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930's, Forrest Mars Senior, son of the Mars Company founder, pitched the idea of the candy we know today as M&M's. Manufacturing of the candy began at a factory in New Jersey in 1941. Mars sourced chocolate with the help of Bruce Murrie, the son of a Hershey executive, and as a result, the name of the candy came from both men's names: Mars and Murrie.

Initially, the candy was only sold to the U.S. Army, and after World War II ended and soldiers returned home, they were well acquainted with M&M's, which helped make the candy a popular snack in the post-war years.

In 1949, the famous tagline, "Melts in your mouth, not in your hand" was released. In 1950, a black "M" was printed onto M&M's to give them a unique look, and this was changed to a white "M" in 1954. And during the 1980's, M&M's went on sale in Canada, Europe, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom.

Here's an interesting fact: Since it's very easy to eat M&M's, the are the most consumed chocolate in outer space. Astronauts love M&M's!

And here's another interesting fact: M&M's were the official snack of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

M&M's may be such a popular sweet snack due to its marketing and advertising humor. Many of the colors have recognizable personalities, and some even appear during expensive Super Bowl ads.

And in 2023, the world seemed to go crazy with M&M news. Prior to the game, the brand announced that actress Maya Rudolph would take over for the colored spokescandies, who were taking a break from their duties, which included participating in an ad during the Super Bowl. In the days leading up to the Super Bowl, the name of the candy was changed, the inside of the candy was changed, and to be honest, it was hard to keep up with all the drama. But then, at the end of the Super Bowl, the spokescandies held a news conference, and all was right with the world: The candies/characters/brand ambassadors announced their return.
